Unleash your inner scientist! The use of biotechnology in agriculture enhances plants, animals and microorganisms. Professionals in this field often have a strong interest and background in how science can modify an organism’s genetic composition, also known as genetic engineering.

Careers in this pathway help make plants more nutritious to eat and enable fish to grow twice as fast. They even use biotechnology to solve global issues. This includes working to increase the world’s access to safe and affordable food and clean water. Scientists and engineers in this pathway often work together to investigate methods of creating fuel from agricultural byproducts and use a range of tools to better understand the basic biology of life.

Floriculture/nursery landscape identification and forestry disorders career development events led me to have an interest in plant pests and diseases. My proficiency was in Diversified Horticulture and I won at the national level in the year of 2020. My proficiency was filled with 6 years of hard work growing plants hydroponically, aquaponically, and studying what variables effect their growth. I am now going to school to be a research plant pathologist in fungal/bacterial diseases. My current research consists of identifying different variations of alternaria in cabbage, broccoli, and kale by extracting DNA and running PCR using species specific primers. By competing in plant CDEs and working on my SAE, I found many of my interests and essentially what I want to do for the rest of my life.
FFA gave me the opportunity to explore agriculture and what it has to offer. I didn’t understand how impactful and vast agriculture careers are until I joined FFA. I am now perusing a bachelors in crop and soil science, then hopefully moving forward with a masters in plant pathology.
FFA, specifically through my experience in Agriscience Research in Plant Systems, exposed me to a broader range of career choices than what I had initially considered before joining FFA. Before my FFA experience, I had primarily considered returning home to farm, bur after learning about the opportunities available at the intersection of plant breeding and physiology, that has now become my primary interest. I am currently a PhD candidate in Crop Sciences at the University of Illinois with a career goal of becoming a plant breeder.
