Commodity Procurement/ Merchandiser

Commodity procurement/merchandisers will work with one or more commodities needed by a particular company. This person will be in charge of locating, trading, purchasing and customer account management as it relates to those particular commodities. They are the point of contact for suppliers and external market consultants and support the commodity groups by negotiating cost-saving initiatives and cost-mitigation efforts.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Collaborate between feed formulators and plant managers to provide lowest cost options for all grain, feed ingredients, proteins and commodities
  • Build productive, long-term relationships with vendors, farmers and suppliers
  • Determine strategic supply objectives using tools and reports to make decisions around products and commodity purchases
  • Assess supply base and negotiate best cost structure according to product specifications
  • Identify and develop a reliable and effective base of qualified suppliers
  • Procure ingredients for current and new product development
  • Advise management of market conditions and supply base activity
  • Drive supplier quality improvement through rapid improvement events, supplier quality audits, training and certifications as required
  • Maintain complete updated purchasing records/data and pricing in company system
  • Coordinate with user departments and suppliers in the purchasing scope of work for projects assigned
  • Monitor and coordinate deliveries of items to ensure that all items are delivered on time
  • Plan and manage inventory levels of materials or products

Education/Training Required:

An associate or bachelor’s degree in agricultural business, supply chain management, accounting or finance is needed.
