Animal Scientist
Animal scientists work to keep animals healthy and improve how they are raised. They use science to solve real-world problems such as improving animal feed, creating safe environments and preventing diseases. They also study animal behavior and genetics to help farmers raise strong, healthy animals in ways that are good for the environment and efficient for production.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
Plan and conduct research to analyze animal behavior and health
Partner with other scientists, technical staff and researchers to achieve project goals
Ensure continuous care and well-being of animals during all procedures
Conduct data analysis and present outcomes
Create and optimize breeding programs to improve animal genetics
Perform research on the quality, safety and nutritional value of animal-based products
Formulate new solutions to control illnesses and parasites, promoting animal well-being
Guide producers on innovative products and techniques that can boost animal production
Experiment with crossbreeding: crossbreed animals with existing strains or combine different strains to create new traits with desirable characteristics
Recommended High School Courses
The following high school courses are recommended: animal science, biology, chemistry, mathematics, English, computer science, physics and agricultural education.
Education/Training Required
A bachelor’s degree in animal science or a related field, such as veterinary medicine, is required. Many positions may also prefer candidates with a master’s or doctoral degree. Employers often look for hands-on experience, familiarity with specific animal species, proficiency in relevant software and sometimes laboratory experience.
