Meteorologist/Atmospheric Scientist

Meteorologists and atmospheric scientists study weather and climate patterns to anticipate events that affect farms, communities and natural ecosystems. They draw on satellite data, radar signals and weather-station measurements to forecast conditions and monitor environmental changes. Some focus on short-term forecasting while others investigate long-term climate trends that support informed planning and environmental stewardship.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

Measure atmospheric properties like temperature, humidity, dewpoint and windspeed

Analyze meteorological data using computer models and simulations

Write computer programs to support weather modeling and forecasting

Prepare short- and long-term forecasts using satellite, radar and station data

Issue warnings for severe weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes and blizzards

Report current weather conditions to the public and industry partners

Conduct research to better understand weather and climate phenomena

Generate weather graphics and maps using specialized software

Collaborate with scientists in fields like hydrology, agriculture and environmental science

Participate in outreach programs to educate the public about weather and climate

Advise industries such as farming, transportation and energy on weather-related risks

Education/Training Required

A bachelor’s degree in meteorology, atmospheric science or a related field is required. For research-oriented roles, a master’s or doctoral degree is usually needed.
