Surveyor

Surveyors measure land or bodies of water to define property boundaries and surface features and support construction, engineering and mapping projects. They use surveying equipment such as GPS receivers, robotic total stations and GIS software to analyze geospatial data and produce accurate maps and critical plans to manage agricultural fields and support the use of precision technology. Surveyors often work with engineers, planners and construction teams to ensure measurements meet project needs.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?
Measure distances, angles and elevations to determine property boundaries
Search land records, deeds and titles for boundary information
Travel to survey areas and locate key features using reference points
Collect and record land data using GPS units, robotic total stations and handheld instruments
Survey, verify and mark actual lines and elevations using precise tools
Use GIS to create maps, charts and visual reports
Evaluate soil and environment to assist in field drainage and irrigation system placement
Prepare and verify maps, plots and reports
Present findings and maps to clients or project teams and support precision agriculture
Establish land and water boundaries for legal documents such as property deeds
Lead survey crews and train junior surveyors
Observe safety policies and verify measurements to resolve discrepancies

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, mathematics, computer skills, physics, English and geography.

Education/Training Required
A bachelor’s degree in land surveying or a related field such as engineering or natural resources is required. All states require licensure, which involves passing exams and gaining several years of supervised experience.
