Forest Fire Inspector and Prevention Specialist
Forest fire inspectors and prevention specialists focus on preventing wildfires in forests, parks and rural areas. They monitor land for fire risks, ensure safety standards are followed and carry out activities such as controlled burns and firebreak maintenance. In addition, they educate communities about fire safety and work to keep people and the environment prepared and informed.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
Inspect forests, parks and agricultural lands for fire hazards
Patrol assigned areas and enforce fire safety regulations
Examine and maintain firefighting equipment for readiness
Monitor weather and environmental conditions that increase fire risk
Develop and implement wildfire prevention programs
Educate landowners and the public on fire safety practices
Collaborate with forestry professionals and emergency response teams
Prepare reports, maintain records and recommend corrective actions
Assist in planning and conducting controlled burns to reduce fuel loads
Investigate causes of fires and document findings
Issue warnings or citations for violations of fire codes
Use GIS and database software to track hazards and prevention efforts
Conduct training for wildland firefighting personnel
Recommended High School Courses
The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, earth science, environmental science, biology, mathematics and social sciences.
Education/Training Required
A high school diploma or GED is required. Many employers prefer candidates with a certificate or associate degree in fire science, forestry or related fields, and some states require passing a certification exam.
