Conservation Scientist
Conservation scientists manage the health and quality of forests, parks, rangelands and other natural areas. They focus on protecting ecosystems, promoting sustainable land use and creating plans that balance human needs with environmental preservation. Their work typically includes field studies, analyzing data and working alongside governments, landowners and environmental groups.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
Monitor land quality in forests, parks, rangelands and other natural areas
Develop and implement conservation plans for sustainable land use
Conduct soil surveys and assess erosion risks
Instruct farmers, ranchers and other agriculture producers on using crop rotation, contour plowing or terracing for conservation
Recommend crops, grasses and forage plants suited to local conditions
Recommend livestock for specific ranges
Oversee land improvements such as fencing, reservoirs and drainage systems
Ensure compliance with environmental and conservation regulations
Use Geographic Information System (GIS) data and remote sensing tools to collect and analyze environmental data
Prepare and manage contracts related to land use and restoration projects
Develop and implement conservation plans for sustainable land use
Analyze data and interpret results for decision-making
Monitor forest regeneration and evaluate conservation outcomes
Update and maintain detailed records and databases related to conservation activities
Stay up to date with new environmental technologies and conservation methods
Assist in wildfire prevention and emergency response activities
Educate communities about environmental protection and resource management

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, earth science, botany, biology, chemistry, geography and mathematics.
Education/Training Required
A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, forestry, natural resource management or a related field such as agriculture or biology. Several states may require some type of credentialing process for conservation scientists and foresters.
