Policy analysts study how current and proposed laws, government policies and regulations affect individuals, organizations and the community. They perform detailed research to determine the effectiveness of policy and suggest improvements to provide direction for organizations. Policy analysts typically specialize in a specific area such as education, agriculture, environment, labor, energy or regional development.

  • Extract, collect and analyze data across different data sources
  • Provide analysis and interpretation of proposed laws, government policies and regulations
  • Develop a specialized knowledge related to the policies studied
  • Propose suggestions to improve the impact of policies
  • Develop policy positions, papers, briefs and other communication tools
  • Monitor emerging issues and new legislation
  • Determine the benefits and drawbacks of existing policies
  • Prepare briefing notes, reports, correspondence and presentations on policies
  • Complete financial impact analyses to help assess the financial impact in the decision-making process
  • Maintain working knowledge of municipal, state and federal regulations affecting the industry
  • Attend meetings for program and policy development
  • Prepare documentation for information on policy requests
  • Support government relationships through direct engagement and by briefing leadership
