Technical Writer
A technical writer communicates complex information in an easy-to-understand manner. Technical writers must become familiar with the service or product technology, acquiring knowledge through research, observation, education and collaboration with technical experts. They create instruction manuals, user guides, educational materials, help documents, assembly guides and how-to guides. Technical writers review, edit and ensure the accuracy of documents, including drawings or illustrations. They then determine the best methods to disseminate this information through appropriate communication channels and methods, updating and refining as necessary.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
- Identify user needs for technical documents
- Acquire knowledge of the product and services through education, research, observation and collaboration
- Obtain advice from technical experts, product developers, engineers, computer-support specialists and other colleagues
- Determine subject matter to be addressed in documentation
- Create instruction manuals, user guides, help documents, FAQs, education resources and assembly and how-to guides
- Edit and revise content to ensure clarity, accuracy and readability for nontechnical users
- Select photographs, images and drawings to illustrate key concepts and provide guidance
- Determine the best medium and method for distribution of technical information and coordinate logistics
- Maintain accurate documentation, assessing user feedback to make revisions
- Standardize materials across departments to ensure consistency
- Consult with product developers, design, manufacturing, information technology and marketing to stay on top of the latest trends, distribution and communication methods

Education/Training Required
Technical writers usually need a bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications, agricultural journalism, English, communications, journalism, business administration, information systems, engineering, information technology or a related field. There are also additional certifications and courses available for technical writers.
