Computer and IT Manager

Computer and information technology (IT) managers plan and oversee an organization’s computer and information systems. They evaluate current systems, improve technology processes, manage cybersecurity and supervise hardware and software operations. They also lead IT teams, ensuring the department has the skills and resources to support daily operations and long-term technology goals.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Plan and direct computer-related and information systems activities in an organization
  • Develop and interpret organizational IT goals, policies and procedures
  • Oversee installation and maintenance of hardware and software
  • Evaluate systems and recommend improvements
  • Set priorities and manage daily IT department operations
  • Coordinate with managers, vendors and other stakeholders
  • Provide technical support and troubleshoot complex issues
  • Create strategies for upgrades and digital transformation
  • Negotiate contracts with technology vendors and service providers
  • Manage the budget of projects and the department
  • Hire employees and oversee their training
  • Implement cybersecurity and data protection measures
  • Prepare and review operational and project progress reports
  • Stay current with advances in technology and best practices

Education/Training Required

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related field is typically required along with relevant work experience. Some employers may prefer candidates with a graduate degree in computer science, IT or business administration.
