Lab Animal Technician
Lab animal technicians help care for animals used in research and ensure the lab runs efficiently. They affirm animal welfare by feeding and watering the animals, keeping their living spaces clean, checking them daily for signs of illness and reporting any changes to scientists. They also help scientists with research, set up equipment and maintain an organized, clean space. Part of the job includes handling animals safely, collecting specimens, maintaining detailed health records and ensuring supplies and equipment are ready when needed. It’s a hands-on role that combines animal care with scientific support.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
Feed, water and provide clean bedding for the animals
Monitor animals daily for signs of illness, communicating with the veterinary team if necessary
Maintain a clean and sterile lab
Support and aid scientists during research
Help handle and maintain animals during transport and procedures
Maintain accurate records of animal health, treatments and medications
Collect specimens and assist with administration and observation
Operate and maintain essential lab equipment
Collaborate with team members to share insights
Set up equipment for use in research
Check supply levels, place orders, and put away and distribute new supplies
Recommended High School Courses
The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, animal science, biology, chemistry, and mathematics.
Education/Training Required
A high school diploma is required for this role, and experience working with animals and in a laboratory is considered an advantage. A Licensed Veterinary Technician Certification or an ALAT certification (Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician) and/or an associate or bachelor’s degree in animal science, life sciences or related degree is beneficial.
