Biochemist/Biophysicist

Biochemists and biophysicists study the chemical and physical principles that explain how living things function at the molecular level. They use tools and techniques from chemistry, biology and physics to explore how cells, proteins and DNA interact. Whether conducting basic research to expand scientific knowledge or applied research focused on solving specific problems, these scientists employ modeling, data analysis and laboratory experimentation to find solutions. Their research spans many areas, from improving crop resilience and developing renewable energy sources to advancing medicine, food safety and environmental protection.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Plan and conduct complex projects in basic and applied biological research
  • Work with advanced tools like imaging equipment and computer models to determine the three-dimensional structure of proteins and other molecules
  • Analyze research data using spreadsheets and statistical programs
  • Study how molecules like proteins and DNA work inside living things
  • Research how different substances affect cells and tissues
  • Keep up with new discoveries through journals, conferences and seminars
  • Prepare technical reports, research papers and recommendations based on their research findings
  • Collaborate closely with scientists from a variety of disciplines
  • Ensure laboratory safety and proper handling of biological materials
  • Secure funding and write grant applications
  • Use technology to create three-dimensional models and visuals that explain complex biological processes
