Fleet Manager

Fleet managers are responsible for managing a fleet of vehicles for a particular company that is used by its employees. They schedule the efficient movement of vehicles and drivers. Their duties may also include overseeing vehicle maintenance, route planning and fuel consumption. At all times, fleet managers are responsible for the safety of vehicle drivers, ensuring that they arrive to their destinations safely, even when they are hundreds of miles away.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Schedule fleet vehicle uses in the most cost-efficient manner
  • Provide for the varied needs of fleet drivers
  • Ensure that fleet drivers arrive at their destinations safely
  • Communicate with drivers and mechanics about complaints
  • Log any violations of fleet or safety protocols
  • Collaborate with various plants and departments to ensure customer satisfaction
  • Monitor purchase of inventory parts
  • Ensure vehicles are up to standards
  • Develop and recommend budgets for the department
  • Ensure that all vehicle operators are trained, tested and certified
  • Ensure that fleets comply with the U.S. Department of Transportation laws and policies
  • Determine how many and what type of vehicles a fleet will need to operate efficiently
  • Maintain correct files regarding delivery shipments, expenses, accidents, etc.
  • Manage the records of all aspects of equipment availability and maintenance
  • Motivate and train fleet staff
  • Negotiate service agreements with clients

Education/Training Required:

A certification, associate degree or higher in logistics, accounting, public administration, agricultural business or a degree related to automotive technology is typically required to become a fleet manager. However, some fleet companies will hire fleet managers with no postsecondary degree if they have experience working as a vehicle driver.
