Maintenance/Service Technician

Maintenance/service technicians perform basic diagnosis and repairs on gasoline engines, diesel engines, transmissions and various agricultural equipment. They are the main point of contact for clients as their equipment is assessed, diagnosed and repaired.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Perform assembly, maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment
  • Read and interpret technical manuals
  • Work with agricultural systems including engines, transmissions, hydraulics and precision agricultural equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance
  • Weld, fabricate metal and assemble electrical units
  • Travel to service equipment in the field
  • Schedule repair appointments with clients
  • Use computers to investigate and repair mechanical equipment
  • Work with customers to locate and diagnose malfunctions
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and ensure work meets specifications
  • Complete paperwork reporting work completed
  • Operate drill presses, grinders or engine lathes to modify parts tested
  • Fabricate experimental parts for testing
  • Maintain the condition of vehicles, inventory, tools and equipment

Recommended High School Courses:

  • agricultural education, particularly agricultural mechanics
  • focus on science and mathematics

Education/Training Required:

A high school diploma or, more preferably, an associate degree or certification in industrial equipment technologies, mechanics, heavy equipment, transport technology or a related field is required.
