General Manager
General managers are responsible for managing and carrying out duties associated with the long-term and day-to-day duties of commercial farms involving animals and livestock. They lead operations by directing and coordinating activities such as animal care, farm maintenance, payroll and record keeping. General managers have a strong understanding of all operations on a farm and will assist when needed.
What Responsibilities Will I Have?
- Lead and manage the overall operation of a farm
- Develop quality working relationships with all team members
- Schedule employees based on their respective departments and strengths
- Perform price negotiations with venders, suppliers and retailers
- Monitor and maintain animal health
- Make recommendations on the best practices for cattle raising, growth and health
- Understand financials and ensure that the farm is running according to budget
- Plan and assist in management of the slaughterhouse, processing and packaging facilities and related infrastructure
- Assist with practical duties such as driving tractors, operating machinery and feeding animals
- Purchase supplies necessary for the farm
- Manage the regular maintenance and repair of facility equipment
- Solve problems as they arise and help farm staff
- Ensure that operations follow applicable health and safety standards
- Develop positive relationships with vendors and suppliers
- Create work schedules and provide clear definition of roles, responsibilities and expectations
- Hire, lead and supervise farming team members and related subcontractors

Education/Training Required:
A degree is not required to become a general manager; however, previous hands-on farming experience is necessary. In some cases, an associate or bachelor’s degree in animal science, agricultural business, farm business management or a related field is beneficial.
