Artificial Insemination Technician

An artificial insemination (AI) technician uses specific tools to insert semen into female animals to assist with impregnation (to make pregnant) in the breeding of livestock species. An artificial insemination technician must understand various animals’ anatomy including dairy cattle, beef cattle, swine, sheep, horses and poultry to ensure correct placement of semen in the reproductive tract.

What Responsibilities Will I Have?

  • Provide artificial insemination services to clients
  • Maintain proper sanitation and cleanliness procedures to maintain a safe work environment
  • Properly store, transport, thaw and prepare semen for insemination
  • Promote new and current products and services to customers
  • Offer reproductive consultation to breeders and farmers
  • Perform pregnancy checks on animals
  • Use humane handling practices when working with the animals
  • Work closely with farm supervisors to better understand an operation and its goals
  • Keep records of all insemination services
  • Assist in inspecting and maintaining the well-being of animals including general examinations and administering of medications and vaccines

  • agricultural education, especially animal science and veterinary science

  • computers

Education/Training Required:

A high school diploma is required, and an associate or bachelor’s degree in animal, poultry or equine science is beneficial but not required. It is also recommended to complete certification from programs that meet the recommended standards of the National Association of Animal Breeders.
