Sheet metal workers fabricate (construct or manufacture) and install metal sheets for various applications including farm and agricultural equipment. Sheet metal workers maneuver and anchor large pieces of metal and fasten seams or joints by welding, bolting, riveting or soldering based on the application, blueprints and sketches.

¿Qué responsabilidades tendré?

  • Assemble metal sheets for fabrication and assembly
  • Comprehend complex assembly drawings, blueprints and sketches
  • Select appropriate material for each job based on the desired or necessary strength
  • Cut, bend and shape sheet metal to the required dimensions
  • Connect pieces or secure seams by riveting, rolling, soldering or using steel screws
  • Ensure all equipment is operating in a smooth, safe and efficient manner
  • Assemble piece parts in accordance with specifications
  • Prepare shop and field drawings manually and with computer programs
  • Utilize small hand tools (e.g., electric drills, grinders) and shop equipment (e.g., drill press, press break)
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in machine-operating area
  • Maneuver and anchor large sheet-metal parts
  • Set up machines according to work order and operating procedures
  • Keep minor records and perform simple administrative tasks
  • Work in accordance with all health and safety policies and procedures and maintain a safe work environment
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs, meetings, etc.
  • Ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn

Formación requerida:

A high school diploma is required to become a sheet metal worker. However, most employers require advanced training through an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are typically for four or five years and teach apprentices how to fabricate pieces of metal. Some states require licenses for sheet metal workers.
