They troubleshoot issues and fix them by inspecting engines, mechanical/electrical components and hydraulic systems. Mechanics ensure that while working they keep their workspaces clean, track their progress, and maintain their equipment and tools in good condition.

- Perform complex repairs and maintenance on equipment like combines and tractors
- Troubleshoot and inspect equipment to detect faults and malfunctions
- Attach components and adjust new farm equipment
- Diagnose faults or malfunctions using computerized and other testing equipment
- Have a strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems
- Operate vehicles and equipment including computers used for diagnostic purposes
- Diagnose and repair a wide range of equipment including agricultural, GPS, lawn care and commercial construction equipment
- Review and explain any maintenance, repair or other service concerns directly with the customer and document this on the work order
- Locate and diagnose a machine’s problem and then generate a cost-effective solution
- Perform diagnosis and repair in the field as required
- Order parts and maintain inventory
- Maintain a current knowledge of industry competitive products
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace
- Follow all safety rules and regulations
- Complete all reports and forms
- Track time and materials used during a service order

Formación requerida:
A high school diploma is required to become a mechanic. However, most employers require advanced training. A vocational or other postsecondary education program in automotive service technology is preferred. Alternatively, one could serve as an apprentice.
