Restoration specialists investigate the connections between organisms and the environment in a variety of settings and make recommendations for improvements to reestablish natural ecosystems. Much of this work will typically include assisting in the implementation of those recommendations.

- Investigate the growth and characteristics of microscopic organisms
- Research cell reproduction and human disease
- Manage research on how organisms react to processes in the environment
- Study the relationships among organisms in their ecosystem
- Examine the effects of population size, pollutants, rainfall, temperature and altitude
- Collect, study and report data on the quality of air, food, soil and water
- Oversee planning and execution of plant ecological assessment experiments
- Research situations caused by man-made practices and their impact on natural habitats
- Develop biological control strategies to combat pests
- Use computer simulations to model problems and evaluate solutions
- Prepare written reports and recommendations
- Ensure operations comply with government regulations
